the crack fox Farm
coastal clay bush block comes organic food forest
4 years ago my surfboard shaper partner and I bought a 1 acre clay-soil coastal bush block in Northern NSW. And it’s been our aim against the odds to turn it into a fertile food forest. Where we can raise our 2 boys, live, share, work and play.
It’s gone from somewhere only the toughest gumtrees could grow. The soil was so acidic and densely compacted, even weeds refused to sprout in places.

Increasing soil fertility on our block hasn’t just been about being able to grow organic food for our home table, or creating a sanctuary where our kids can learn and encourage their interest in the natural environment — it’s been about rehabilitation of this patch of land here in Yaegl Country we are honoured to be caretakers of. Bringing wildlife and essential insects back, and species of native flora.

Along the way, it’s become where I farm 100% of the chillies and most of the specialty and native ingredients for Crack Fox. Something that feels like an incredible privilege as a maker — to be able to personally take my product from seed all the way through to it’s bottle.

We realised early on, that without a big budget, animals are were going to be an essential part of creating soil fertility here. Their bedding, droppings and pooped-in-ponds all contain essential nutrients like nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus for plant growth, increasing microbes in the soil, and improving soil structure.
Raising animals on our block means we would have all of this on tap. Along with having assistance keeping pests, and weeds down. Making it possible to farm our chillies and veg without the use of synthetic chemicals.
